Training Session Start!

Alrighty, I just got Microsoft Office 2010 about a week ago and to my surprise discovered it has a blog posting feature. One of the problems I have with posting to wordpress is images. I tend to use quite a lot of pictures when I post something and the interface for getting them INTO the post is definitely quite cumbersome. So I’m hoping that this will make it a lot easier for me.

Okay, yes, I know I haven’t been updating for quite a long time, I think it had something to do with increasing workloads and friends calling me out and stuff on weekends. Anyway, I’ve played a number of games since the last time I posted, but I’ve kind of stopped playing most of them, except for Monster Hunter. Well, I’m actually trying to step up my game for Monster Hunter and it’s been pretty fun so far. What I’ve done is started a training regime, where I have to defeat each monster in the game using every single weapon type. I still haven’t gotten past the first monster yet, so this might actually take a year or more to complete!!!! There are some extra condition that I wrote up in a word document, but I’m not gonna bother going in to all the nitty gritty details. Simply put, if I use a specific weapon against a monster and defeat it, I can’t use it against another monster. The same thing applies to armour, but per each weapon type, so I can use the same armour against the same monster as long as my weapon type is different. And there are no restrictions on items to compensate for the lack of power. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that weapon and armour rarity is capped at HR rank -2. I might be increasing that if the monsters start becoming unmanageable, but I’ll stick with that for now. And finally, all monsters must be defeated at high rank, so starting from HR4. This post is gonna be pretty long so I might just post it up half complete and then finish it off some other day.

First up! The Great Jaggi (ドスジャギィ). I’ll be using the weapons in this order:

  • Great Sword
  • Long Sword
  • Sword and Shield
  • Double Swords (Can’t remember English name)
  • Hammer
  • Hunting Horn
  • Lance
  • Gunlance
  • Strike Axe
  • Light Bowgun
  • Heavy Bowgun
  • Bow

Most blademaster weapons seem to have some kind of powerful attack, so I’ll list them out here:

  • Great Sword : Unsheathe Charge Level 3
  • Long Sword : Spirit Gauge attacks full combo
  • Sword and Shield : None (Just use your longest combo string)
  • Double Swords : The multiple slash attack that activates when demonization mode and in normal mode after demonization is active
  • Hammer : Charge Level 3 standing attack. Last hit of normal combo.
  • Hunting Horn : First and Second performance attack
  • Lance : NONE! (Use a Giant Barrel G instead lol)
  • Gunlance : Full Burst. Wyvernfire
  • Strike Axe : Repeated Slashes. Elemental Burst

So far, I’ve completed everything up to the Strike Axe, so only the ranged weapons left. I guess I’ll start by first talking about the Great Jaggi and its attacks.

Don’t try to look cool, you ain’t so tough!

Well, it’s pretty obvious it’s a raptor like looking monster, and has two other cousins which I won’t talk about here. He’s got about 4 or 5 different attacks, so it’ll be pretty easy to go through them one by one.

Consecutive Bites (連続かみつき)

Yeah, you’ll notice I have the Japanese name up there and I pulled that from the official guidebook. That’s right, these attacks have official names! So I won’t have to make up random names for them. XD

Okay, moving on. It’s a pretty straightforward attack, he just walks up to you, and gives you a bite. It comes out pretty fast and that’s where the danger is. You really have to just expect him to do it every time, so be on your guard for it. If he faces you and you’re in range, just move away. There’s actually two parts to this attack, but he doesn’t always perform the second bit. He’ll actually travel further with the second bite and can again, it is possible to be caught unawares. If he bites the air in front of you and you’re out of range, there’s a good chance he’ll follow up with the second part of the attack. Also, when he’s in rage mode, he tends to do the second part even if you’re not in range. It can make him travel out of your attacks, so anticipate that he’ll do the second attack and attack where he’s going to be after he performs the second bite.

Rotating Bite (旋回かみつき)

A bit devious, this attack, he’ll turn his head around and look backwards for about a second before biting in that direction to the back. So it gets you if you’re attacking at his sides. He can either do it to the left or the right and it’s pretty obvious which way if you watch his head. The tricky thing about this attack is that the attack seems to appear out of a direction that you’re not expecting. If I’m too close to him, the block angle becomes really weird. Dodging away towards his tail tends to not work if I’m close, but dodging past his neck seems to work fine. Unfortunately, that goes against natural instinct, so it’s pretty confusing and I tend to get hit by this.

Body Slam (体当たり)

Not a very special attack since you can see it coming a whole 2 seconds away. He’ll make a unique sound that he only makes before he does this attack. It travels for quite a distance and does hurt quite a bit if you get hit, but it’s really quite avoidable.

Spinning Tail Attack (回転尻尾攻撃)

Probably his deadliest attack, and he always does it in multiples of 2. In fact, a LOT of monsters seem to have this attack in some form or another. I guess they learnt it from watching each other or something. Once again, he makes a unique sound that sounds like 2 short laughs and 1 longer one when he does the attack. It’s quite easy to get hit by the tail since it’s hard to predict the attack area, so just stay away. Since it’s always done in a multiple of 2, you tend to know where he’ll be when the attack ends, so get ready to be there when it ends and get in a hit or two!

Movements

That’s all for the attacks so I guess I’ll talk about how he moves. By the way, this is for the high rank version, the low rank one tends to be less aggressive, so you don’t need to think as much. When at a distance, he tends to just walk straight up to you, waits a second, then performs an attack. If it’s going to be a body slam, he’ll do it from a greater distance. In high rank a few monsters seem to have gained this “shadowing” movement ability. Most MH players develop a circle strafing style of playing to keep themselves on the move, not too far away from the monster and just wait for an opening. The shadowing move these monsters gain was made to counteract that by making it seem like they’re following you. It’s not ‘smart’ movement, though. Once they start doing the shadowing, if you stop moving they’ll keep doing it. The best way is to just counter it. The monster will turn at specific intervals, so if you can predict when it’s going to turn just hit it when it does so. They tend to move and turn one or two more times after you hit them, so it’s actually quite safe. If you don’t feel like attacking, just run towards the monster, past it and it’ll break the shadowing. Finally, he can do a long backstep which puts him out of your range.

Taunt

The Great Jaggi will leer with his head quite close to the ground when taunting. He’ll also make a unique sound that he only does while taunting. Remember this since you can get in a free attack when he does it.

Group Attacks

The main annoying thing about this guy is that he calls the rest of his family to attack you. And in high rank, he can call the bigger Jaggis as well (females, I think). They are very disruptive especially if you have a shield. There are occasions where I was blocking, the Great Jaggi starts an attack and I get hit from behind by some small monster. This breaks my block and makes me take the full brunt of the Great Jaggi’s attack. The females also have a body slam move that can send you flying. The danger of this is actually getting cornered by them. It is possibly to get body blocked, preventing you from dodging an attack simply because there’s no space. Basically, if you have a high mobility weapon, keep yourself on the move and away from corners, attack the Jaggis if you see an opportunity, but always prioritise the Great Jaggi. If your weapon is slower, you will need to take down a few of them to ensure that you don’t get cornered too badly, having one or two around is still manageable. You should attack the smaller ones but only when the Great Jaggi is away from you.

Attack Opportunities

I’ll be talking about attack openings in this section. After his bite (or second bite), rotating bite, body slam and second spinning tail attack, you have an opening to get in one to two hits. The opening can be wider depending on what he decides to do after, but it never hurts to play it safe. If he does a backstep, sheathe your weapon and wait for an opportunity to hit him with an unsheathe attack (blademasters only). In fact, sheathing is the key to this (and many other) battles. You can also get it in one to two hits when he does a taunt, so learn what it looks like.

When he calls for support, he puts his head up high and makes some dog like noises. This actually gives you a huge opportunity to get in your strongest attacks. Finally, when he enters rage mode, he’ll stomp his feet on the ground and then give out a howl. And THEN he does a taunt after that. You can actually get in TWO of your strongest attacks when he does that, depending on how far away you were from him when he started.

Right. That’s all for now. I’ll be posting more when I have time, but consider this part done! :) I should be done with the Great Jaggi by the next time I post so that means I’ll have a huge backlog of updating to do since I will be going through how I did it for each of the weapons. XD

Searching for a sharp bone…

So I had actually been playign Dissidia for a while.  Again.  I keep thinking to myself “Oh, it’s not so bad, I should give it another chance.”  So I go ahead and for a while it isn’t that bad.  Then I just realise I’m just repeating the not fun bits again and again to get very hard to get items.  And my reward for that is MORE not fun bits.  There is some joy to be had in grinding out new equipment… but it eludes me here.  I don’t even get to SEE what it looks like!  It’s just a bunch of words on a screen.  Dissidia always tempts me by offering bonus EXP, Gil, AP, PP on certain days.  But when you really get down to it, those bonus days feel like normal days.  And the normal days are like sub-standard days. :(   It is a big grind, with no tangible reward at the end.  So anyway, I stopped playing that and moved back to Monster Hunter!

My poor, poor weapon is so brittle.  It’s called a hard bone lance (ハードボーンランス) and has very poor green sharpness.  I normally go through 5-6 whetstones just to take down easy monsters.  It *can* still fight while it’s on yellow since it’s got a massive yellow area, but honestly, the weapon bounce is too deadly.  Yellow even bounces off a Royal Ludroth’s spikey front legs. XD  The hard part in all this is getting a Sharp Dragon Bone (尖竜骨 – senryuukotsu).  It’s a quest reward for many different quests, but you only get one at a time and I think I need 3 more.

Anyway, good news!  I got homebrew for the PSP that lets me take screenshots by pressing the ‘Music’ button.  At any time!  It’s called prxshot and I think it was a competitor in the Genesis PSP Homebrew 2011 competition or something.  I must say it works really well!  The game even jerks for a split second when you take a screenshot.  Which is a good thing, in my opinion.  Otherwise, I wouldn’t know if I did press the right button to get the shot.  The bad part of this?  It’s pretty hard to take a shot when you want to as opposed to recording a movie and pulling out the interesting bits.  Also, the pictures are PSP-sized, so they’re pretty small on a PC screen.  They’re not too exciting yet, but let’s get rolling!

Sometimes you get some pretty scenery shots in MH.  Just wish I could’ve turned off the UI

I’ve been going up against a Royal Ludroth (ロアルドロス) to try and get the bone and, as you can see, they really like to roll.

And rolling again.

Okay, the high rank version of this guy actually has a new move.  He can only do it in rage mode and what happens is that he’ll lunge forward a bit, then jump while turning his body sideways and then rolls on top of you.  It’s not an amazing move, and it never hits. XD  Well, most of his attacks never hit anyway, otherwise I’d be having a hard time!

Sometimes, though, he just topples over and can’t get up!

OPEN WIDE!!!  SAY AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Classic case of “Didn’t that used to be stuck on behind me?”

Oh no!  He’s got a lock on that poor cat!  Reminds me of a dog when in that pose.

He just loves making big splashes!  It’s quite blockable despite it looking quite imposing!

I never really figured out how to use this emote.  Does anyone know?

Lastly, Aoshira really has poor manners!  Stop wagging that tongue around!

Alright, that’s it for now!  Really wish I had something more exciting to update with, but it’s gonna have to wait till I get that lance upgraded.  Yes, I am using the Hard Bone Lance in those pictures, and you’ll note that it’s yellow quite often too! XD

The Guardian of HR5!

Hello again!  It’s been a while since I’ve posted and this post should’ve been made about 4 or 5 days ago, actually.  I’ve been lazy, that’s all, and was distracted by Dissidia.  No, not the 2nd game with the unbeliveably long and ridiculous sounding name, not that Dissidia doesn’t sound ridiculous.  I’m playing the first simply because it’s the first and apparently all your stuff can carry over into the 2nd game (seriously, like wtf man!).  Anyway, it gives you bonus points for playing on certain days so I’ve been trying to accumulate some extra stuff.  But yeah, this game is odd, it makes you feel LESS rewarded for fighting a difficult opponent.  As, in, you can fight a string of weak enemies and win in the time it takes you to fight and retry repeatedly against a tought oppoenent, and the rewards for fighting the string of weak guys is greater!  Well, that’s what you get from an RPG company. :P   When the tough enemies just block my attack the moment I press the attack button after I was just walking around for at least 3 seconds doing nothing…. just makes it feel unfair.

Anyway, BACK TO THE TOPIC!  I have advanced into HR5!!!!!  To get there, I had to go through a whole bunch of upgraded low-tier monsters, a pink Ludroth and the final showdown with the Guardian himself, Nargacuga  (ナルガクルガ).  As bad as he was before, he’s even badder now!  His speed hasn’t increased (I think), but his recovery time seems to be faster and LOVES to do his ’360 whole body spin around’ attack a LOT more often.  I believe I had to fight him for 3 hours straight before I got the hang of it.  Even then, the final battle took 42 minutes since the High Rank monsters have RIDICULOUSLY high HP!  Well, they are designed for a party of people, not for a single person.  XD

First thing I had to do was to get rid of the pig, though.  Yeah, there was a big pig running around that needed some skewering (Bulldrome (ドスファンゴ)).  It took about 5 minutes and after that, it was just one on one with the big guy himself.  Well, me + 2 cats against the big guy. XD  He’s got a new attack now, some kind of long range leap.  It only hit me once, so I get the feeling it’s designed to be more of an anti-gunner attack.  His tail swipe also seems to have received a range boost, and really caught me off guard mulitple times!  Other than that, the battle proceeded as normal, with me slowly whittling down his HP.  In a new cruel twist, he DIDN’T limp at all, before heading off to sleep.  I could’ve caught him AGES ago if I knew he was ready to be caught, but it seems that the High Rank monsters have a bigger delay before they start showing signs of limping.  At any rate, here’s the camera shot of the ending!

Yeah, it’s a bit blurry.  I’ll make sure I get better shots next time.  Sometimes I just wish I didn’t have to use the trap before I use the tranquiliser bomb!  Moving on, the armour set that I used and weapon too.

It’s~~~~~~ Ingot Armor!  Yes, I know it’s not a really shiny example of a great armour set. XD  It IS the toughest Rare 2 armour, but that being said, it IS Rare 2. XD  It’s been upgraded quite a bit now and gave me a total Defense value of 175.  The Longsword used was the 真ユクモの太刀改 (shin yukumo no tachi kai).  Ugh, I don’t really want to explain what that means since it sounds silly in English.  I think it was about 205 attack or so, no element.  Skills on the left 腹減り無効 (hara heri mukou – Stamina doesn’t decrease).  The next skill wasn’t used since it deals with lightning attacks so I’ll ignore that.  Next up 風圧無効 (fuuatsu mukou – Protects againts wind pressure).  I didn’t really use that one either, but it was good back when I was using this armour against Rath, both of them.  Finally 砥石使用高速化 (toishi shiyou kousoku ka – Whetstone usage speed up).  It’s a really useful skill, though not so much for this weapon.  It means your character only uses something like 1/4 of the time to grind your weapon.  Yeah, I know, I could’ve farmed a better set of armour to go up against it, but hey, it was annoying me, and HR5 is when all the REAL farming starts. XD

Last two pictures!

Yup, 42 minutes.  Indeed.  Very long.  Mental stamina.  Quite drained.  X___X

Party!  Party!  Party!

To be honest, I haven’t done much since I got to HR5.  I’m aaaaaaallllmost done grinding out a new set of armour, so hopefully that’ll be enough to contend with the bigger and badder monsters lurking around HR5.

In other news, I got a job now!  Starts on Monday!  So yeah, I’ll have less time for gaming.  Well, that just means I’ll have to be more picky with what games I play!  That’s all for now! :)

The Hunt Continues!

Well, it’s been another long while!  Finalled advanced to Hunter Rank 4 today!  It really took me ages, mainly because I was playing other games, but I also wanted to be able to take a video of the fight with Jhen Mohran.  But unfortunately…. the program I was using on my friend’s PSP doesn’t work on my PSP.  So yeah, NO MORE screenshots!! :(

The Guild quest against Jhen was only 20 minutes!  I didn’t realise it until the message said (10 mintues) remaining.  I kinda panicked and thought I’d just restart the thing since he didn’t even show any signs of going into the 2nd part of the battle.  Buuuuuut, fine minutes later, after poking him in the holes in his spine, he gave up and went away! :O  It was after that I realised that he would ALWAYS run away in this quest. XD  Which kind of explains the time limit too.

I get to do the 6 star quests now, which, thankfully, look a lot less deadly than the 5 star ones.  Here a bear, there a raptor, everywhere a boar.   No freakin’ giant lightning wolf monsters!  The deadliest thing I could see was a Royal Ludroth (ロアルドロス) and frankly they’re not that scary.  Sure, the monsters have been given some boosts since they’re high rank, but their attacks remain mostly the same, so it’s not so bad!  Oh, the attacks retain their *on block* effects too.  Meaning that they don’t really hit you any harder if you block, unlike the 5 star beasts which give you a punishing even when you’ve got that shield out.  Things are looking up!  I can see an armour with Guard+, which will probalby help me once I get to the next rank after this.  HR5 is where things get big, it looks like. XD

I think I will try using the camera from now on to take shots.  I mean, I don’t have much choice now, do I?  Hahahaa….

Back to Hunting Monsters!

Yeah, since I got my PSP, I’ve actually been playing OTHER games than Monster Hunter! I know, shocking isn’t it!? :O Well, it’s just that after you’ve invested over 100 hours in a game, you want to look at some other stuff.

So I looked, and I played and…. it wasn’t fun. I just can’t put my finger on it, but a lot of games didn’t have a satisfying feel to it. So I tried MH again today, and I just made me remember why it’s a fun game. It’s got the formula right, for grinding. There is a lot of grinding in this game, but they got the formula right for grinding. There’s a lot of tension. When you’re up against a monster, you always feel it. You HAVE to continuously focus on it or you might just bite the dust. And that’s why the game is fun, you feel the tension. Honestly, when I’m against a monster and it decides to leave the area, I can feel like my breathing become more relax and I take a moment before I chase after it again.

I guess that’s what the other games I’ve played lack. The tension. Some games just feel brutally unfair and you feel like you can’t do anything to get better at it. While others feel just way too easy and you just blast your way through. The tension needs to be there. The moment where you give your all and struggle before you either emerge victorious or get blown seven different ways into oblivion. I died three times today, all when I was over halfway to victory and all because I made ONE fatal slip up. But, it was still fun!

It arrived!

Guess what, it was my birthday last week, on the 17th!  I didn’t want a party or anything of the sort, but I decided it was finally time to get myself a present!  Since I’ve been playing Monster Hunter so much, I decided to get the game at last.  But… with no PSP?  Fear not!  Sony finally released the MHP3rd New Hunters pack on February the 10th, why that’s right before my b’day. XD

So I went on Play Asia and attempted to buy one… they only had 2 in stock.  And… it required instant payment from PayPal.  Now I don’t have a credit card so I had to transfer the funds first into the PayPal account first before I could use them. >_<  Normally, this takes 3 working days.  By the time it transferred it was the 17th!  I happily went home to put my payment in…. only to find that it had SOLD OUT!  D:  FORTUNATELY, I found another one on eBay for just slightly higher than the one on Play Asia.  I actually had looked on eBay before I went to pay Asia, but they were all insanely overpriced.  As opposed to the one I bought, which was just overpriced. XD

Well, it IS a limited edition PSP and only available in Japan, so retailers to foreign customers are free to charge whatever price they like.  And rightly so, I can’t blame them for doing it – there ARE people who would pay twice what I paid.  So here’s what the box looks like!

The Japanese words under the big MHP3rd logo say : 新米ハンターズパック (Newbie Hunter’s Pack)  It just amuses me that the kanji for newbie/beginner is literally “new” and “rice”. XD

Okay and here’s what the stuff in the box looks like!

PSP, charger, power cord, battery, MHP3rd game and MHP3rd Tigrex cloth! XD  I don’t really like Tigrex that much since he’s such a b*****d… but I do like the Red/Black motif on the PSP!  Interestingly enough, the label on the box said “No Li-ion battery included”.  But that was to fool customs! XD  Apparently you can’t ship Li-ion batteries in some countries, I’ve no idea about this.

The real ordeal began after this, though, since the game actually asked me to update to firmware version 6.36 (it was 6.35 at that time) to run MHP3rd.  There’s hardly anything out there homebrew-wise that works on 6.36 ON a PSP-3000.  So after much reading about stuff online, I decided to try and installed custom firmware 6.35 PRO-B.  It’s a slight risk, since I wasn’t sure if it’d work with a PSP-3000, BUT I didn’t see anything bad being said online.  You know what they say, no news is good news!

…. and….. IT WORKED!  Needed one more step after that, though.  The UMD of MHP3rd still asked me to install firmware 6.36, but I read somewhere that I needed a version.txt file for firmware 6.37.  So I found that, popped it into the Memory Stick and it worked like a charm.  Of course, that version.txt only works with custom firmwares, so I couldn’t have used it from the start!

So PSP is running, MHP3rd is running from UMD (media installed – 540 MB), and I can run homebrew stuff.  The only thing is…. I’m new to the PSP scene so I’ve no idea what kind of homebrew to get…. XD

Progress Has Been Slow due to Lack of Funding

Ohkay, so the actual title doesn’t really have any connection with the post itself, but I couldn’t think up something interesting!  I reckon I might have to make another “Slow Progress” post someday so  I thought I’d need something to make the title more unique.

Yes, it’s another Monster Hunter post!  I’ve been wanting to do some of other games, but I haven’t been able to find anything worthwhile to play… and succeed at.  I did try some game that felt unfun throughout the stage and then does something nasty to me after playing the stage for an hour and made me lose. =__=

Right!  First, I guess I should report my progress!  Well, the farming of Rathalos succeeded and I got his rare item… uhh… 火竜の逆鱗 in Jap.  Which basically reads “Fire Dragon’s Reverse Scale”  or “Fire Dragon’s Imperial Wrath” O__O.  I’m not exactly sure what a Reverse Scale is, though, but Imperial Wrath makes no sense.  Anyway!  With that, I managed to make his armour, which has a cool skill that increases your crit chance if you attack a monster’s elemental weakness.

Basically, after taking down Tigrex (ティガレックス) and Diabolos (ディアプロス), and having a HARD time at it,  I decided to get prepared for any future battles so that I could do them easily instead of having to restart multiple times. >_<  Next up on the hit list was Agnaktor (アグナコトル) and he *seemed* like he would be a mean, tough, customer.  Well, turns out it wasn’t necessary, turns out, he moves really, really slowly.  I was using a bow, too, so I could just keep my distance, and spam the AoE attack.  Seriously, faster monsters can avoid that AoE quite easily, but this guy just sits there and takes it.  Well, he went down without too much trouble.  With that, it unlocked the 6 star urgent village quest – Jhen Mohran (ジエン・モーラン).  It seemed pretty tough (at that time) so I decided to clear up ALL the Guild 4 star quests.  Well, it took a few days, but I did it!  And got nothing for my efforts. :(   No achievements or anything.  Oh well, here’s the screenshot:

Right!  Moving on!  Okay, it’s been like 5 days since I’ve touched this page and WordPress was acting preeeeety werid back then.  My Dashboard just looked out of place and I couldn’t upload any pictures.  Well, that’s all fixed now, so I can finally finish this!

Final thing to add, since Jhen Mohran unlocked, I went after him using my lance and nailed that sucker!  Unlike other monsters, you seem to be able to carve him many, many, MANY times.  I did about 5 before my time ran out.  T__T  It’s like he’s got different carve locations on his body, and each one can be carved at least 3 times! :o   The actual battle itself was rather strange, since you’re on a ship, sailing on a sea of sand…  You have to attack him with ballista and cannon shots till he gets close enough, then you can climb up on him and poke some holes in the back of his spine!  His attacks aren’t actually very deadly at all!  But the catch in this stage is that the ship you’re on has durability, and if it reaches 0% (from ol’ Mohran’s attacks) it’s Quest Failed.  After you’ve damaged him enough, you get to fight him on “land”.  Well, solid sand, I guess. :S  Your ship will still be there, though, and he’ll be slowing advancing to it.  If he gets close enough, he can seriously damage it!

The ship itself has quite a few tricks.  You can pick up ballista ammo from the Blue Box or one at a time from a place near the ballistas, towards the aft.  There are 4 ballistas, two on each side, but you can still fire to the opposite side regardless of which one you pick.  There are also two cannons, one on each side, and you’ll need to pick up a cannonball, carry it over to the cannon and use it for it to fire.  It’s just like carrying an egg. XD  Watch out, though, if you fall the cannonball will explode!  There’s also this huge gong thing that makes a loud scream but I’ve no idea what it does.  o___o  And finally, there’s a massive hapoon like spike in the front of the ship!

I managed to use the spike only during the 2nd part of the fight on “land”.  But it was dramatic!  He had managed to close the distance to the boat and attack it, and a message popped up “Boat HP less than 30%!!!”  or something. XD  I ran up to the spike activation thingy (right on the front of the bow), and popped it out into him.  And it took out one of his horns as well! :D   And right at that moment, the MH theme music started to play. XDD  I ran back down to the ballista.  I was all out of normal ammo, but that’s alright, I wanted to use the alternate ammo anyway!  When you fire this shot, it will trap Jhen Mohran with a bunch of ropes from the ship.  It doesn’t last very long, seems a bit longer than a normal shock trap.  However, while the ammo is infinite, you can’t use it continuously, since it has a recharge time!  Oh yeah, you just pick this ammo up from the Blue Box too.

Anyway, soon after that, I just ran forward and kept poking his belly (with a lance) as much as possible, and the GIANT whale soon keeled over and gave up!  It’s really strange, though.  I mean, the monsters don’t bleed and hardly look like they’ve been injured when you hit them.  So when something THIS HUGE just drops dead from being *tickled* in the stomach by a lance about 1/100 it’s size.  It just feels a bit odd. XD   I don’t actually have any pictures of the battle.  :(   So the only thing I can show here is *proof* that I finished it! Yaaaaaay!

So my next target!  HR4!  Which means fighting this quest again as part of the Guild Quests.  But I still have to get through Diabolos, Tigrex and Agnaktor first. @__@  I’m trying to switch back to using a lance again, and I just got some Narga armour, so I’m hoping that helps me!  I’ll see how it goes, and hopefully it won’t be so long before my next post!  :D

Looks like it’s farming time!

Right!  It’s been a while since I last posted.  Partly because I’ve been lazy and that’s mostly due to the fact that it’s been so freakin’ hot!  I have another post to catch up on as well, but don’t really feel as motivated to do that one just yet.  So anyways, I finally managed to make a set of armour in MHP3rd that I’ve had my eye on for a quite a while now! It’s called the Guild Armor in Monster Hunter Tri, but the actual names for the male and female versions are different.  Male : Guild Bard (ギルドバード)  Female:  Scholar (スカラー).

The hard part in making this armour isn’t the actual hunting of monsters, but the amount of onsen and drink tickets required for it.  (9 onsen and 2 drink, if you were wondering)  These tickets are pretty hard to come by since you only get them when you use the onsen or buy a drink, and the probability of getting one is pretty low.  It feels like somewhere around 5~10%.   You also need a different monster part for each armour piece.

I can’t be bothered finding out the Eng names for each of the items. :P   One interesting thing to note is that Japanese versions of MH have alternate names for each monster.  For example, the Great Jaggi (ドスジャギィ) is known as a 狗竜, or “Dog Dragon”.  And the stuff that drops from him tends to get labeled as such.  Like 狗竜の皮 (Dog Dragon’s Hide), would be Great Jaggi’s Hide in English.  So I’m just going to list down what to farm to get it.

Head: 雷狼竜の蓄電殻 – Get from Jinouga (ジンオウガ)

Body: 不気味な毒腺 -  Get from Giginox (ギギネブラ)

Arms: 爆鎚竜の耐熱殻 – Get from Uragaan (ウラガンキン)

Waist: 肥沃なドロ -  Get from Barroth (ボルボロス)

Legs: 鮮やかな体液 – Get from Hapurubokka (ハプルボッカ) Sorry this monster has no Eng name yet!

Of course, there’s other stuff like Dragonite ore as well, but you should have no trouble getting those.  Anyway, on to the pictures!

Decorative sword – It doesn’t do anything!

So, what makes this armour special is that if you capture a monster (as opposed to killing it), you will get increased loot from the capture!  Well, I thought this would be just perfect then to try and farm those rare item drops that I’d need to make other armour sets.  Of course, by using this armour, I give up a lot of other useful armour skills…

So I decided to go farm a Rathalos (リオレウス).  He’s got a 2% chance on capture that he’ll drop his rare item.  I’m not exactly sure what it translates to in English…. so I’ll just call it a rare item. XD  This is on Low Rank, of course, I haven’t progressed to HR4 yet!  So I set off, and then promptly forget that I don’t have protection against his wind pressure… which led to a multitude of defeats!  X__X  Well, I had to play more cautiously after that.

Blasted wind pressure makes me cower in fear!

When using the lance, it’s important to keep up a good defense against this guy!  Some of his attacks just reach too far so I’d much prefer blocking to using any evade moves.  Generally, if I’m feeling unsure if he’ll attack, I’d use the counter-attack move of the lance as the 3rd attack on my normal combo string.  This move puts you into a guard state for a while, and if you get hit during that state, you’ll block the attack and retaliate with an upward thrust.  It’s preferable to just waiting for your combo string to end and then blocking since there’s is absolutely 0 delay in getting this move out.  The downside is that it’s possible that your counterattack will whiff since some of his moves will put him out of your attack range.

Here’s an example of just randomly using the counter attack.

I do just ONE hit and then go straight into the counter ’cause I have a feeling he’s about to attack

Indeed he does and launches a fireball right at me!

It doesn’t actually hit me, but explodes right in front of me!

And here’s the block!

Please note that all this was within the span of 2 seconds

Another thing that Rathalos can do is his roar.  It’s a low level roar, but since I’m using this armour, I’ve got no protection against it.  Also, if you’re standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, like so….

I’m standing really close to his head when he does his roar that indicates a shift into rage mode and then….

He combos with a fireball!  Yup, I do go flying!

Finally, another thing about this armour set is that it has the ability to tell you when a monster is ready to be captured.  Monsters in this game will limp away when they’re on low HP, but there’s a catch.  They’ll only start limping when they want to move to a different area.  So they may be on low HP and fighting you with everything they’ve got, and be ready for capture, and you wouldn’t know it!  Which is what happened to me, I was so used to not needing to check if it can be captured, I didn’t notice the indication.

See the white circle on the map, normally it’s pink.  When using this armour, it flashes white when it’s ready to be captured.

Here’s a better closeup of the map.  Rathalos was changing areas at that moment.

This is area 7 he was moving to area 8… which I then jogged over to and…

CAPTURE!!  Um, yeah, the funny pose is because I got hit by that Jaggi over there.

And finally the most important part…

PHAT LOOT!

Alright, the items on the top are quest rewards while the bottom ones are rewards from breaking body parts and from capture.

Okay, three of the items on the bottom were from breaking Rath’s head and two wings, while the other three were from the capture! :D   I didn’t get the rare item, but oh well, it’s rare anyway!  Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to cut his tail because of his awful wind pressure. D:  All in all, it’s a challenge using this armour. @__@  I’m not sure how far I can go with it, but I’ll see what it’ll get me!

I’ll need to compare this picture to a normal capture, just to make sure this armour is doing its job.  I reckon it is, though!  I’ve never gotten up to 6 items before.  Oh yeah, I photoshopped the colours in these photos a bit ’cause they look faded on the computer and ended up being just a bit too saturated. XD

Warning may cause seizures!

Don’t you just love it when a game says that?  Well, that’s the very first thing that Beat Hazard tells you when you start it up. XD  It’s an indie game I got of Steam as part of a pack that someone gifted to me. (Thanks!)  Well, the other games in that pack aren’t that great, or at least, not as great as this game!  See, what it does is turn any of your music files into a game.  Yup, I know there are many games that do that, but this one is different because it’s a shoot ‘em up!  And where it really execls are the crazy seizure inducing visuals. XD  It generates the same kind of enemies and patterns depending on the song, so replaying a song will ensure a similar experience, so you’ll be able to “learn” a song until you can beat it!

The bullets and effects in the game actually pulse according to the beat of your music, so just showing screenshots doesn’t really do it justice, but I’ll put a few in anyway!

WOOHOO!!  SEIZURE INDUCING!! XD

The song I chose was Rain by YUI.  The great thing about this game is that you don’t play it constantly over and over again.  All you have to do is play it until you get bored of the music that you’ve played it with.  Once you get new music, just start it back up and it feels fresh all over again!  Of course, if you download music every day, it might be a bit too much, but it’s pretty good for me since I update my music only like once a month or so.

I hate the asteroids in this game, ’cause they split into smaller bits when you destroy them, and YUI’s song had SO MANY of them.  Why do you do this to me YUI?

Yeah, you can see that my firepower in this screenshot is rather limited and I’m being surrounded by nasty nasty lumps of metal all out to crush my poor little ship into space dust.  The firepower actually depends on how intense your music is, so if it’s going kind of quiet, the number of bullets that you shoot will be greatly reduced.  This often happens when there’s a vocal only part in the music where the instruments are mostly silent.  Of course, most good songs will ramp up after that and you can get back to blasting stuff again!

Yeah, this is a good example of what happens.  See the tiny stream of dots I’m shooting? XD  That’s what it looks like when the music is quiet.  And the enemies just start to pile up!

And… this is how awesome your bullets are supposed to look like!  It’s best if you know when the quiet parts are in the song, so you can sort-of prepare for the bad stuff that comes.  Getting a quiet bit during a boss is not fun!  Bosses?  YES, there are bosses!  Two kinds of them only at the moment, though. :(   One’s a giant ship thing and the other are two medium ship things.  YUI’s Rain only generated the two medium ship ones, though.

The bosses have random weapons out of a set of four different weapons, I think.  These medium sized ones have two attacks.  The one shown here is by far the most deadly thing in the game so far!  There’s a sound before it fires, but you have to be constantly be moving in a direction before it does, or you’ll be vapourised!  Those bullets are really really fast!  It’s actually deadlier to have them on the two meidum sized ones than the big ship since, well, you need to evade in a direction that both of them can’t hit you in.  Actually, now that I think about it, these two smaller ones are actually HARDER than the big one!  Until you destroy one, that is, then the other dies quite fast.

Oh, yeah, one last picture, I had to play this stage many many times, but I finally succeeded! :D   Victory pic!

Insane is the 2nd hardest difficulty ><

Rapid progress!?

It’s been a short while since my last post and since then I’ve taken down these three bad boys here!  Well… I can’t really call them that, can I?  They went down without a fuss at all!

On the top : Rathalos (Jap: リオレウス)

On the right:  Uragaan (Jap: ウラガンキン)

On the left:  Dobolbelk (Jap: ドボルベルク)

I’m not quite sure what happened here.  Now of course, I did die when I fought them, but only once per battle and it was because I got careless/greedy.  Other than that, I got them on the first time I fought them and didn’t use more than 5 Great Potions, I think.  I’m guessing all that training fighting Nargacuga really paid off against these guys!  I was using the same equipment for all 3 – a drill lance and ingot armor.  Lance had the attack boost, and the armor was upgraded to level 3.  It was also socketed for extra lighting element damage.  Well, +1 damage.  I’m not exactly sure how elements work here.

Yeah, all the examples I’ve seen of elements seem to show that they do damage in the hundreds, which is then mitigated greatly by the monster’s resistance.  I’ve only seen elmental damage on weapons in this game to the amount of less than TWENTY.  Which means if it works the same way as before, I’m dealing less than elemental 10 damage per hit. XD  I’m pretty sure it doesn’t, but I’ve no idea how it works currently.

So anyways, I’ve taken these guys out and advanced to 6 star village quests.  Things looks harder here and I’m expecting Tigrex to give me a huge problem.  The Narga + Jinouga quest seems rather scary too…

I think I’m going to go back and clear up some older quests first!  So it’ll be a while before I have anything exciting to post about. :(   Oh well.
